GPS-Independent SLAM Localization in an Apple Orchard
SLAM-based mapping and localization in an apple orchard with hail protection nets—where GPS fails. The video shows how autonomous systems achieve precise, stable, and reliable navigation without GNSS.
In this video we demonstrate SLAM-based mapping and localization by Vision & Robotics (V&R) in a real agricultural environment – an apple orchard covered by hail protection nets, where GPS reception is unreliable or unavailable.
The orchard is first mapped using our SLAM system, generating a precise 3D reference map of the environment. Based on this map, reliable localization is then performed without relying on GNSS. Even under the hail nets and within narrow rows, the system maintains stable positioning and orientation.
This approach enables autonomous machines, vehicles and robots to operate accurately and safely in challenging agricultural environments. Typical applications include autonomous field robots, precision farming, navigation in orchards and structured crop systems, as well as automation tasks where conventional GPS-based solutions reach their limits.
The video highlights the robustness, accuracy and efficiency of our SLAM technology and shows how GPS-independent localization can unlock new possibilities for automation in modern agriculture.
